Check out their portfolio hereWhere are you from and how long have you been in construction?
Thomas: I was born in Greece but came to NYC when I was about 3 years old. I’ve been in construction for 18 years.
Mike: I’m from Greece, and I have been involved in the construction industry for the last 25 years.
How did you get into this industry?
Thomas: I started out working for my father in plumbing at about 13 years old. I received a degree in architecture and went to work for a mechanical engineer after college and eventually ended up in construction.
Mike: From a very young age I worked with my father, who was a tiler. I enjoyed tile work and continued with the trade work.
What do you love most about your work?
Thomas: Process, process, process! I enjoy taking the time to set up what is required to have our business running efficiently and for a streamlined approach to construction. We don’t always have a clear path and things change often, but the process has to adapt for the end goal to be met.
Mike: I enjoy transforming my clients’ spaces into what they dream of. We always try to exceed the customer’s expectations.
What is the biggest challenge about renovating in New York City?
Thomas: There are too many moving pieces and red tape. Construction is easy, people are hard.
Mike: Parking, garbage removal, and running around from one project to the next.
Renovate to live, Sweeten to thrive!
Sweeten brings homeowners an exceptional renovation experience by personally matching trusted general contractors to your project, while offering expert guidance and support—at no cost to you.
What do you think is the biggest misconception homeowners have when starting a renovation project?
Thomas: That everything is easy. Sometimes the simplest thing, that in theory, should be completed in one day, turns into three. We have to account for the unknowns, as professionals, and even then sometimes we get it wrong.
Mike: The organization of the project, the day-to-day activities involved in getting it where it needs to be.
What’s one of your favorite projects you’ve worked on?
Thomas: A three-building lobby renovation portfolio that we worked on in Queens. It’s a space that everyone in the building will enjoy.
Mike: We worked on a pool renovation in SoHo. This is not something that comes by every day!
What is your favorite NYC building?
Thomas: The Flatiron building
Mike: 56 Leonard street
What is your favorite NYC neighborhood?
Thomas: Chelsea
Mike: Astoria, Queens
