Site Visit with Bear Mountain Woodworking

by Shera Nuss

Our 6th Home School series giveaway with Brooklyn Based is up and running (yay!), which makes now the perfect time to introduce prize-sponsors and tS network members Ezra & Rachel Picard of Bear Mountain Woodworking. The husband-wife team joined us earlier this Spring, and we’re looking forward to seeing Ezra knock out some great projects with us! The craftsman loves pushing his creative limits with custom projects, from furniture to cabinetry, to cottages in the woods. When the larger jobs are done, Ezra & Rachel have even found a way to turn the wood scraps into artisanal serving boards, platters & bowls, which are available for purchase at BMWW’s Etsy store — but if you’re interested, you can also try your luck at Home School #6, and enter to win a BMWW serving board, along with $50 to spend on yummy artisan snacks from  With Love, From Brooklyn

Here’s Ezra in his soon-to-be-former shop. The craftsman actually just picked up the keys to a new wood shop — a large barn up in Peekskill.

While moving shops, Ezra is also still hard at work on a 400 sqft office / cottage; here’s one of the nooks in the space during construction. The project is for a professional couple, both management consultants, who live in northern Westchester. When not traveling to meet clients in the city or abroad, the couple is able to work from home — but with small children also in the equation, they needed to create a serene and productive workspace. Ezra started on the ground-up construction, which is located just outside the homeowners’ main house, in January, and will finish up later this month.

The completed cottage structure will feature a built-in Maple desk and shelving; above you can see the desktop coming together in the shop. Rachel told us that the highlight of this project has been building these custom elements, “Ezra is a skilled carpenter, but his passion is definitely for finer woodworking.”

Here’s a look at a nook in the space where the desktop has been installed. The finished space will function as a fulltime home office as well as occasional guest quarters for friends & family. So far, it looks like it’s coming along quite well — we can’t wait for the final touches!
