Site Visit :: Custom Built-in w/ The Loftmen

by Shera Nuss

This week we stopped in to see  Zach & Pavel, aka The Loftmen, in their Greenpoint workshop. We get a lot of projects posted on our site from homeowners looking to build a murphy bed, built-in pantry or new bedroom built-in, so we’re excited to welcome these guys to theSweeten Network!

Zach & Pavel also showed us one of their newly installed custom built-ins which now resides in the guest room of a pre-war, Midtown apartment. Over 12 weeks, the guys worked closely with the architect and homeowners to bring together a perfectly customized storage wall that seamlessly integrates modern and traditional aesthetics.

Zach and Pavel, aka The Loftmen.

Here’s the recently finished wall unit; the built-in was designed by an architect in a way that cleverly fuses both traditional and modern styles.

It features traditionally-inspired elements (classical archways, wallpapered backs, & picture rail moldings) which are reduced to create a modernized version; eg. the arched-form face without vaulted ceilings. Also, by simplifying certain elements, the sleek lacquered surfaces & concealed modern hardware still appear contextual in a classical setting.

The guys constructed the unit in their workshop using FSC (sustainably harvested domestic) certified plywoods and hardwoods and explained that they had to build with exacting precision, as there would be no way to touch up the custom-matched, lacquer finish during installation.

We love the versatility that this built-in offers by combining concealed storage with open storage & illuminated alcoves –now the homeowners can determine what to show off and what to stow away!

When we asked this homeowner, Katie, about her experience working with The Loftmen, she told us:

“[The Loftmen] exceeded expectations. In an industry with so many unscrupulous individuals trying to make a quick buck without putting in the time, they are in a league of their own.”

Now if you’re suddenly envisioning your own built-in (like we all are), take a look at our pricing guide for some helpful tips.

Big thanks to homeowner Katie, and to Loftmen Zach & Pavel. Can’t wait to see more from your shop!
