Renovate Clinton Hill AptPosted by Erica D. in Prospect Heights
I have lived in the apartment for ten plus years and have always wanted to make it "bigger" and more efficient by using the space more effectively.
Not sure I can afford to do all the changes but want to get a sense of what I can afford to do. The walls definitely need repair but the other cosmetic changes (update kitchen, open up living space, widen closet entrance doors, built in shelves) will be based on cost.
Design and Build
Haven't decided yet
A little worn; Functional but...
Walls are in definite need of repair. Rest of space is functional but worn. Floors were redone (sanded and resealed) about ten years ago. Bathroom has original details but in decent shape.
Scope of work
WALLS: Based on an assessment from a Pinter my walls need to be rebuilt (scrapped down and re plastered) in order to fix the uneven painted over patchwork from previous tenants and fix water damage on walls in kitchen and all the peeling paint on doors and frames
KITCHEN and LIVING AREA: would love to open up this space and at the same time figure out how to make the dining area a closed off space when needed for guests.
Basic shape of kitchen would remain the same but cosmetic changes to counters, back splash and cabinets would be needed. There would need to be some wall removal and most likely the floor will need to be changed to match new lines of kitchen.
CLOSETS: I have lots of little closets and would like to widen openings to take advantage of space way up top.
ELECTRICAL: would like to add a line for my AC.
Built in shelves in living and bedroom.
Knowing that someone was going to hold our hand through this entire process was so important for us. Paulina did just that. Right from the start that we knew we were in good hands. Having someone who had a good eye and combined with quality craftsmanship made for an incredible new space. The finished project is so much more beautiful then we ever imagined it to be (even with all the computer drawings.)!! They do really outstanding work and are easy to work with. At no point during our renovation did we find it difficult to work with anyone from the team.
Responsive to questions as they arose - I always felt like our questions were answered and were always welcomed. While we mainly communicated with Paulina, everyone was so kind and warm. Impressive workmanship - our cabinets are so well built and the walls and floors are impeccable. They really know what they are doing. Our kitchen is simply beautiful!!! Good eye - Paulina has a good eye and could "see" how well materials would work together long before we did. Clean work space- Since we were living in part of the apartment during the renovation I so appreciated how clean the guys left our space each day.
Unexpected challenges or surprises were handled very professionally and timely. Paulina was quick to provide alternative samples or options for solutions. We never felt rushed or pressured to decide before we were ready. Paulina has a way of offering a good balance of guidance and allowing for exploration. Perhaps our biggest bump in the road was our countertop choice was discontinued. She provided alternative samples and options, but also was open to suggestions we had. Two situations (radiators and ceiling light) had challenges due to the nature of the building structure and rules. Thanks to Paulina's responsiveness we were able to find solutions that we really like.
