2014 Year in Review: Sweeten Blog Favorites

BEST-OF-BLOG-2014

New York City homeowners undertook more than 82,000 renovations in 2014! At Sweeten, we were busy finding the right contractors for $100M in renovation projects across the City. Here are just a few of our staff and reader picks for the most inspiring renovations on the Sweeten blog this year.

Our most beloved post of 2014 came from Allison and Jovito, who guest-authored a blog memoir of their dramatic Brooklyn kitchen and bath renovation. Readers loved everything about this renovation: the herringbone floors and vintage-inspired wall tiles were just the beginning of our collective envy for this couple’s beautiful new home.

Sweeten team fell hard for this charming couple and their futuristic bath. With inventive storage, unusual materials, and a starring waterfall sink, we were thrilled to be a part of Howard and Grazyna’s contemporary bath renovation.

Erica and Donna took a space with amazing bones and history and unified it with highly-saturated wall colors, neutral furniture upgrades, and industrial accents. We especially loved the gray bedding, teal wall, and over-dyed rug in their new bedroom – it’s the headlining photo on Sweeten’s home page these days!

SWEETEN_2014-SASKIA

Ben and Saskia managed the near-impossible by turning a run-of-the-mill studio into a one-bedroom plus baby nursery plus custom closet space, just in time for the arrival of a new addition to the family. We loved this couple’s unfussy style and the laid-back, lived-in feel they brought to their new home, proving that square footage doesn’t have to be an obstacle for a growing family.

SWEETEN_2014-MARISSA-2

Marissa in Prospect Heights pulled back the curtain on lighting and paint design tricks that brought commenter accolades for turning a small, outdated nook into a gorgeous old New York / old Hollywood bath. We loved Marissa’s vision for classic black and white, and her eye for small footprint but big impact décor details. We’re betting this bathroom renovation will find its way to Apartment Therapy in 2015!

Three of our most stylish homeowners went with Benjamin Moore’s Coventry Gray this year. West Village homeowner, Elizabeth, used it to offset restored white trim in her eye-catching two-bedroom renovation, Brooklyn Heights homeowner Amy went with the same pick as a complement to classic subway tile in her vintage-modern bathroom, and we saw it again in this glamorous London Terrace co-op, along with the likely reason for this hue’s supreme appeal: it is the color favored in Dior stores around the world!

SWEETEN_2014-CLAIRE-2

It’s always fun to see what custom cabinets can do for an otherwise simple kitchen, but we were especially wowed by Claire and Mike’s distinctive cabinet paint color choice in this Park Slope kitchen transformation.

SWEETEN_2014-PEPPER

OK, ok, we could have gone with a few awards on this one, considering how much we loved Pepper’s unusual and vibrant encaustic tile picks for her Art Deco-inspired bathroom makeovers, but we were also taken with the couple’s rescue cat, Chewy, who stayed put just long enough for the required family photo shoot.
